Our client’s are free spirited “outdoorsy” types, who love to camp and get their hands dirty. They grow their own fruit and vegetables, make their own bread and jam and collect eggs from the chooks up the back. Their new house had to reflect this lifestyle so at the heart of the new extension is a deck that connects the living and kitchen spaces and acts as an outdoor living space. Connected to the deck a double-sided fire place where the family enjoys glowing coals under the stars or an open fire crackling away in the family room in Tassie’s colder months.
The roofs were designed to maximise the winter sun and allow a view to the rear yard that is on a steep slope. The existing part of the house contains bedrooms that were made private by a level change of 6 steps up to the living spaces. The new extension created a homely, hardy, well ventilated, open and welcoming living spaces that feel like one house.
Weatherboards, pressed metal and stained glass were nods to the 1950’s original house. The majority of the materials were either sourced locally or recycled including the studs, boards and bricks.
